Pleasant Obadiah Chism was born on September 1, 1843[1] in Jackson County, Arkansas.[2] In 1850, he lived in Prairie Township, Newton County, Arkansas.[3]
When the Civil War started, he enlisted in the Union Army on February 12, 1863 in Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas as a Corporal. He was assigned to the 1st Arkansas Infantry, Company C.[2][4] His unit was garrisoned at Fayetteville, Arkansas after formation. The unit was poorly equipped and still waiting for uniforms, with Confederate forces attacking the town and garrison. Fighting lasted nearly three hours, with fighting on College Avenue and Dickinson Street. They were successful in repelling the rebels and holding the garrison. Shortly after the battle, they were forced to evacuate the town due to shortages of equipment and supplies. They marched to Cassville, Barry County, Missouri and garrisoned there for a short period before returning to Fayettville, Arkansas. After returning, they joined the Army of the Frontier and marched to Perryville in the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. While there, they pursued rebels and were in a skirmish in Perryville on August 26 and the Battle of Devil's Backbone, Back Bone Mountain, Fort Smith, on September 1. They helped capture Fort Smith and garrison there until March of 1864. While garrisoned in Fort Smith, they were involved in a skirmish at Moffatt's Station, Franklin County, on September 27, 1863. In November, they left Fort Smith and marched to Waldron, Scott County, Arkansas. They garrisoned in the town and patrolled the surrounding area for rebel forces. On November 13, they were involved in a skirmish at Mount Ida, where they surprised a Confederate camp and captured prisoners and supplies. While stationed in Waldron, they scouted the area, including Caddo Gap and Dallas. The year they wintered in Waldron was an extremely cold winter. Heavy snow fell in the area, and temperatures dropped into the teens. The 1st Arkansas Infantry lost over a third of their men to disease and desertion. In February 1864, they were ordered to report to Fort Smith, Arkansas, to join General Steel's Expedition to Camden. They fought at the Battle of Prairie D'Ane on April 9 through the 13th, Battle of Moscow on April 13th. and later at the end of the same month at the Battle of Jenkins Ferry. After that, they traveled to Little Rock, Arkansas, and then returned to Fort Smith, where they garrisoned for the remainder of the war. While stationed at Fort Smith, they engaged in escort and guard duties. They were frequently sent to rescue Union men and their families. The regiment participated in skirmishes at Bates Township on November 2, and in Newton County on November 15, 1864. At the end of the war, he mustered out of the service on August 10, 1865.[5]
