Biography

Bela was born on December 2, 1767, in Salisbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut Colony. He was the son of Bethuel Chittenden and Deborah Strong.[1][2] After the birth of his brother Bethuel in 1772, his father moved the family to Tinmouth, Rutland County, Vermont. By 1790, he and his brothers were living with their uncle Thomas Chittenden in Williston, Chittenden County, Vermont. Within in the year, his father moved the family to Shelburne, Chittenden County, Vermont.

Bela married Phoebe Hard about 1794 in Chittenden County, Vermont. They had fourteen known children, all born in Shelburne, Chittenden County, Vermont.[1] They were:

He raised his family in Shelburne, Chittenden County, Vermont.[14][15][16][17][18]

His wife Phoebe died on November 13, 1830, in Shelburne, Chittenden County, Vermont.[19]

Bela died on June 21, 1842, in Shelburne, Chittenden County, Vermont, at age 74.[20] He was buried at Spear Street Cemetery in Shelburne, Chittenden County, Vermont.[21]
