Biography

Gabriel was born around 1794 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. He was the youngest son of John Church and only son to Jane Andrews. Gabriel fathered most of his children with Mary Breshears, after her untimely death, he took up with younger sister Sarah Breshears. Sarah first appears documented with Gabriel on the 1850 census. They are shown living in the household of daughter Carol and Alexander, her husband on the 1880 census. They were living in Jobs Cabin Township, Wilkes, North Carolina at the time.

• 1850 census, recorded mistake on date of birth. Making Gabriel too old but household names are correct.
• Dr. John Henry Scalf, Professorof sociology at UNCW, did extensive research on "Yankee John Church, interviewing and collecting documents ,as his wife was a descendant of the Church line. Wilma Jean Reynolds his assistant ,descendant from "Yankee John's son Amos ,recorded in June 1984 some of Gabriel's info, I received copies of some of the notes. "All of Gabriel Church's children belonged to his first wife,this info from Alma Church_Gabriel was her g.g. grandfather.
• Family Information that Joyce McNiel has: "Family Story Gabriel was squrriel hunting with his first wife Mary.The gun went off accidently and she was killed. Mary's sister Sarah was living with them at the time. Gabriel marries Sarah."
