A Benjamin Clardy came to America in 1621 with his father Francois Clitdieu. They were French Hugenots who had made their way to England because of religious persecution in France. In 1621, Clitdieu and his family were given land in VA, if they would leave England for America. My guess is that Benj. Clardy had already gone to England and anglecized his name to Clardy before his father came to England, and they all came to America together. No mention is made of Clitdieu after he came to America, so probably he changed his name too. If this is true, then there were 87 years between this coming to America, and Benj. Clardy, who was born in 1706.
