Thomas served in the United States Navy prior to the Spanish-American War. He was a Coal Passer aboard the USS Maine when it exploded in Havana Harbor on 15 February 1898. Thomas was killed along with over 250 of his shipmates.[1]

Note that Thomas' family was incorrectly counted twice in the 1870 Census, with slightly different ages each time.
