My Papa Fred P. Clark was a small-framed man with red hair and blue eyes. He was in his 60's when I was born, and always seemed old to me as a child. He suffered from ill health most of his adult life, and my Nana Ethel was constantly trying to fatten him up. I can picture him in his green woolen pants with suspenders, green gum rubber boots and pork pie hat. He was an introvert, content to stay at home with his dog, pipe, books and projects. He loved to sing, and I remember him strumming his guitar and teaching me to sing Let Me Call You Sweetheart and Down in the Valley.
