Biography

I recently received this email from Jacqueline Elderkin (jte870@hotmail.com),

Hello - The 1813 death date for Irene (or Irena) Clark Hutchinson is all over the internet, but it is, unfortunately, incorrect. Irena was very much alive for many years after her husband's death in that year. She was one of the administrators of his estate and was involved in selling property related thereto, as shown by the newspaper advertisement transcribed below: Northern Whig, 5 March 1816 Take Notice By Virtue of an order from the Surrogate of the County of Columbia, the subscribers will offer for sale, at public Vendue, on the twenty eighth day of March next, at nine o'clock A.M. at the house of widow Hutchinson, in Canaan, a part of the real Estate whereof Benjamin Hutchinson died seized Situate in the town of Canaan in said County and described in said order as follows: Lying on the East of the road leading from Eleazer Root's to widow Kirby's; on the north by lands of Eleazer Roots; East by Gershom Babcock; South by Samuel Knappin, and west by the road aforesaid; Containing about five acress; and also one other piece of land, bounded as follows - lying on the west side of the road aforesaid, on the north by Eleazer Root's; East by the road aforesaid; South by widow Kirby's; and west by a line to be drawn from the Southwest corner of Ezra Patrick's land, to the northwest corner of widow Kirby's land, containing about twenty four acres more or less. The above described premises to be sold by Virtue of the Surrogate's order. her Irena x Hutchinson, Executrix mark Samuel Lampher Wheeler Hutchinson Executors Ezra Patrick As the date of the notice was 1816 and the sale was to take take place at the house of "widow Hutchinson", plus Irena being identified as executrix which corresponds with her husband's will, she obviously had not died in 1813. Additionally, Irena Hutchinson was enumerated in the 1830 census in Canaan, Columbia Co., NY; she appears in the index as "Irean Hutch Kinson", and in the census itself as "Irena Hutchkinson". A DAR application paper submitted by her granddaughter, Mary Jane Hutchinson Hoyt, gives Irena's death date as 17 Dec 1853. Whether that date is correct or not, I do not know. I had posted some of this information on the old Genealogy.com message board several years ago but trying to correct inaccurate information online is like trying to empty the ocean with a teaspoon. For what it's worth, I am a direct descendant of Benjamin and Irene/Irena Hutchinson.

In light of this new information, I have changed the date of her death.

She lived to 111, really? I've wondered if in fact we have the right Irene as Benjamin's wife, or the right Benjamin. If she is the one who married this Benjamin in 1781 at age 39 (when he was 21), then had 10 children, all I can say is, "Wow!"
