Biography

Thomas Stephen Clarke was baptised on 21st November 1819 at St Mary's Church, Dover, Kent, the son of Stephen and Alice Clarke (transcript).

We have yet to find Thomas Stephen in the 1841 Census.

Thomas Stephen Clarke, coachman age ~21, and Catherine Sophia Chamberlain, also age ~21, married after banns on 3rd August 1841 at St Paul's Church, Deptford, London, Kent. They were both of this parish (addresses not given). The witnesses were Thomas Chamberlain and Ann Chamberlain.

Thomas Stephen and Catherine Sophia went on to have six children, and the family's addresses recorded at their baptisms show how the family moved around regularly in the Greenwich/Woolwich area: Mary Ann 1842 (Royal Mile), Catherine Sophia 1844 (Roan Street), Thomas John 1845 (John Street), William Jonathan 1848 (John Street), Richard 1849 (Royal Place), and Emily Alice 1851 (Taylor's Buildings, Bull Fields).

Note: Thomas Stephen was recorded as a coachman in most records. On son Richard's 1849 baptism he was recorded as a groom. On daughter Emily Alice's 1851 baptism he was recorded as a 'flyman', that is the driver of a fly or express coach, (possibly between Dover and London?).

In 1851 Thomas Stephen, coachman age 31, and Catherine Sophia, age 31, were living at 4 John Street, Greenwich, London, Kent, with their children Mary Ann, scholar age 8, Catherine Sophia, scholar age 6, Thomas John, scholar age 5, William Jonathan, age 3, and Richard, age 6 months.

In 1861 Thomas S, coachman age 41, and Catherine S, age 41, were living at 10 Little George Street, Greenwich, London, Kent, with their children Catherine S, house servant age 16, Richard, scholar age 11, and Emily Alice, scholar age 9.

In 1871 Thomas S, coachman age 51, and Catherine S, age 51, were living at 1 Topham Place, Greenwich, London, Kent, with their children William J, machinist age 21, and Richard, masoner age 21.

Thomas Stephen must have died some time between 1871 and 1881, as his wife Catherine Sophia was recorded as a widow in the 1881 Census.
