Charles was born about 1838. He is the son of Isaac Clawson and Abigail Neal.

On 29 July 1850, the 1850 U.S. Census recorded 12-year-old Chlarles D. Clauson in his parents' household in Lodi, Seneca County, New York. The record lists farmer Isaac A Clauson, 48; Abigail Clauson, 43; Elisabeth Clauson, 16; Ira Clauson, 14; Charles D Clauson, 12; William F. Clauson, 9; Silas H. Clauson, 5; and Barney Clauson, one month. All were born in New York. [1]

The 1860 U.S. Census recorded 58-year-old farmer Isaac Clauson and 56-year-old Abigal Clauson in the Town of Lodi, Seneca County, New York,. The other members of the household were Elisabeth Clauson, 25; Charles D Clauson, 22; Firman F. Clauson, 19; Silas H. Clauson, 16; Barnabas Clauson, 10; and Benj Clauson, 8. Isaac, Abigal, and Elisabeth were born in Schuyler County (New York), and the younger children were all born in Seneca County.
