Biography

Norman Claxton was born in the Colony of South Australia (1836-1900)

Norman Claxton was born in 1877. He was the son of William Claxton and Annie Parr.[1]

He represented South Australia in cricket and played Australian rules football for North Adelaide at the top level,[2]

as well as having an interest in cycling, hockey and athletics.

But it was in baseball that he left a lasting legacy, by donating the Claxton Shield which bears his name. The trophy is awarded to the champion State baseball team in Australia. The Claxton Shield was the name of the premier baseball competition in Australia held between state-based teams, as well as the name of the trophy awarded to the champion team. Norman Claxton's contributions to Australian baseball, led to him being inducted into the Baseball Australia Hall of Fame in 2005.

He passed away in December 1951.[3] And his Death Notice in the Adelaide newspaper The Advertiser of Friday the 7th of December 1951 states:

CLAXTON.—On December 5, at a private hospital, Norman Claxton, of 57 Childers street, North Adelaide, son of the late Lieutenant-Colonel Claxton, and loving brother of Violet Broadbent and Elsie. Aged 74 years.

He was laid to rest at the North Road Cemetery in Nailsworth, South Australia, Australia.
