Biography

Susan S. Clement was born about 1838 in Granville, North Carolina to Simon Clement & Nancy Cozart. She passed away about 1898, probably in Person, North Carolina.

Her father died in her birth year, and her mother married second, John Bumpass in 1839.

On 1 Oct 1842, the estate's commissioners divided Simon Clement's enslaved people into 5 lots:

• No. 4 Creaner 16 $400, Calvin 7 $225, average $625 to Susan Clement, receiving $36.^[1]

By 1850, her family had removed to Person, North Carolina, where Susan was called Bumpass, living with her step-father John Bumpass, her mother Nancy Cozart Clement Bumpass, and 7 other Bumpass step-siblings.^[2]

Susan S. Clements married Groves Meadows on 17 Jan 1855 in Person, North Carolina.^[3]

The 1860 census in Person, North Carolina of Groves Meadows 32 & Susan Meadows 22 included two daughters. Groves was a farmer with $2,000 in real estate and $5,000 in personal estate. All the family were born in North Carolina.^[4] The slave schedule of Groves Meadows reported 9 enslaved people and 1 slave house: 32 F B, 24 M B, 14 M B, 9 M B, 8 F B, 6 F B, 5 M B, 3 M B, 1/12 F B.^[5]

In the 1870 census, Groves Meadows 43 and Susan S. Meadows 32 were living in Mount Tirzah, Person, North Carolina with 5 children and Yancey Bowlen 70. Groves was farming and had $2030 in real estate and $600 in personal estate.^[6]

In the 1880 census, Groves Meadows 53 and Susan Meadows 44 still lived in Mount Tirzah, with 5 children and her mother Nancy Bumpass 76.^[7]

Groves Meadows died about 1882 in Person, North Carolina.^[8]
