Biography

Joel Cloud was born on the 6th of August 1793, in Warren County, Georgia. [Quaker records list Joel's birth as 6th 8th 1793. In 1753 when the calendar changed from the old Julian to the new Gregorian calendar this made Joel's birth month August. Joel was the son of Joel Cloud and Hannah Pyle.

Joel married Nancy Wilder on the 22nd of January 1837 in Warren County, Georgia. ^[2]

Joel, age 57, appears in the 1850 Federal census as head of household in Warren County, Georgia. Joel's household appears as follows: wife Nancy, age 50; and son Obadiah L. (Lewis), age 12. ^[3]

Joel also appears in the 1850 Slave Schedule as the owner of 18 slaves (7 males and 11 females). The slaves ranged in age from 58 years to 6 months. ^[4]

Joel, age 66, appears in the 1860 Federal census as head of household in Warren County, Georgia. Joel's household appears as follows: wife Nancy, age 60, son Obadiah Lewis, age 22, and daughter-in-law Margaret (Lowe), age 20. ^[5]

Joel also appears in the 1860 Slave Schedule as the owner of 28 slaves (12 males and 16 females). The slaves ranged in age from 60 years to 1 year. ^[6]

Joel died on the 31st of January 1861 in Warren County, Georgia.

Per Voucher No. 5, dated 1st February, in the Inventory and Appraisement records of Joel Cloud's estate show that a metalic Burial Case with Satin which cost $100 was purchased; and on the 2nd of December 1861 the estate paid $125.00 for 1 Box Tombstone for Joel Cloud dec'd and $9.12 for 228 letters at .4 cents a letter and $12.00 for putting up Tombstone. ^[7]

Joel's son Obadiah Cloud applied for administration of his father's estate on the 27th of February 1861; and the Letters of Administration was granted at the April Term 1861. ^[8]
