Thomas was born on May 12, 1843 in South Carolina. He was the son of Thomas Clyburn and Catherine Blue. Thomas participated in the civil war. He enlisted on September 1, 1861 in South Carolina and served in Company E, 12th infantry. A family slave, Weary Clyburn, served as his body guard. Thomas married Mary Margaret Lorena Perry and had a family of at least seven children. Thomas died on October 16, 1896, in Lancaster, South Carolina, at the age of 53 and is buried at Douglas Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Lancaster, Lancaster County, South Carolina.
From Find A Grave: "Col. Clyburn Dead,A Good Soldier and an Honored Citizen, Special to The State Lancaster, Oct. 17 - Col. T. Frank Clyburn of the Twelfth Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers, died at his home in this county after a short illness last night. He was one of the best known and most popular citizens, having been a member of the house of representatives, State Senate and county auditor for several terms. This last official position he held at the time of his death. Col. Clyburn was perhaps one of the youngest men to command a regiment in the Confederate service. Obituary: Colonel T. Frank Clyburn of Lancaster, died at his home in that county on Saturday. He was at one time commander of the 12th Regiment of South Carolina Volunteers, and ever since the war has been a very prominent citizen of Lancaster County.
