Sampson was born in Newberry Co., South Carolina to "Big" John Coate and Rachel Wright.
Sampson was married a woman named Carr, and they had three children. After her death, Sampson was married to Abigail Pearson on Mar. 25, 1826 in Lawrence Co., Indiana, and they had three children. Sampson was married to Susan Riley on Feb. 13, 1830 in Lawrence Co., Indiana, and they had six children. Sampson was married to Sarah Evans on Oct. 4, 1848 in Greene Co., Indiana.
