Biography

Agnes Leone Coble was born February 6, 1902 in Hyannis, Grant, Nebraska, USA. Her parents were Arthur V. "A.V." Coble and Maude O. Davis. Her parents divorced in 1909. [1]

By 1910, Agnes is 8 years old, and living with her divorced mother and two older brothers (Dwight D and Lewis C), in Moon Lake, Brown County, Nebraska, USA. [2]


In the 1920 US Census, her mother has remarried an innkeeper, living on 28 Main Street, in Johnstown, Brown, Nebraska, USA. Only Agnes remains from the original family, along with five boarders (not listed). List: [3]

"In the late 1920s, Agnes and her husband, WIlliam, moved to California. She told of loading all their possessions, two dogs, and two small boys, into an old car and travelling back to Nebraska (from Ohio), then on to California. " [1]

Agnes died, May 28, 1976, [5] and was buried at Monterey City Cemetery (Plot: Lot G, Block 69), in Monterey, Monterey, California, USA. [4]

Obituary in the Monterey Herald, 5-28-1976: "Agnes L Hammond, a resident of the Monterey Area for 46 years, died today at Community Hospital after a period of failing health, She was 74. Mrs Hammond was born in Nebraska, Feb 6, 1902. She was a member of Ocean Spray Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, in Pacific Grove, and the White Shrine of Jerusalem. She is survived by her husband, William H Hammond of Monterey; two sons, Galyn C Hammond of Monterey and Wesley A Hammond of Wenatchee, Wash; and five grandchildren. Private services will be held at the Mission Mortuary with internment to follow in the Monterey City Cemetery. Gifts in her memory may be made to the EMI Scanner Fund, Community Hospital, Box HH Carmel, or to the Monterey County Chapter of the SPCA." [1]
