Biography

Martha, who apparently preferred Mattie, was born in Arkansas about 1875, possibly 26 January 1875, to William Coburn and Lizzie Desmuke Coburn.^[1] She married George R. Campbell in Garland, Arkansas, on 29 January 1893.^[2] They had several children, including Jesse, Robert, Elsie, and George.^[3] On 15 April 1931 Mattie married a second time, to John Thomas Hicks;^[4] John died in 1934.^[5] Mattie died in Greensboro, North Carolina, on 1 November 1962 after falling and breaking a hip.^[1] She is buried in Green Hill Cemetery in Greensboro.^[6]

Research Notes

• Birth date is difficult to determine. While Mattie's death certificate gives 26 January 1875, the 1880 census has her at 7 years old, and other records have her born as late as 1879. Her first marriage record gives her age as 18, but her birthday fell between the day the license was issued (23 January 1893) and the wedding (29 January). Heritage-577 11:51, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
• There is a wedding between a Mattie Coburn and L.O. Birkhead in Prairie, Arkansas, on 15 January 1890. This is a different person, born in 1870 and died in 1894. (FAG 18315399)
