Alexander was born in 1874 in Yonkers, Westchester, New York State. He was the son of William Cochran and Eva Smith. His family was wealthy through his grandfather's carpet business.
In 1920 he married the Polish opera singer Ganna Walska in Paris. becoming her third husband. The marriage did not last long and they divorced in 1922 without issue. The divorce settlement amounted to some $3 million.
He passed away in 1929 at Saranac Lake and is buried at Oakland Cemetery, Yonkers.
