Biography

Born in 1856 (exact birth date per death certificate), the earliest record of Vianna is in the 1870 Census (no 1860 Census record as been located to date), residing in her widowed mother's home in Benton Township, Pike County, Ohio.

Sometime in the summer of 1876 Vianna conceived a child out of wedlock. The birth, recorded on 15-Mar-1877, shows the daughter's name as Clara A Brodess. The birth record also shows Vianna living in Pike County, and the father, named as Charles W Brodess, living in Ross County. The 1880 Census shows Vianna and her daughter, now called Cora, living in the household of Vianna's mother, Elizabeth (Purdum) Coder. There is no record of Vianna every marrying Charles W Brodess.

In 1886, Vianna married Joseph Murphy, also of Benton Township, Pike County. The Murphy's are recorded on the same page as the Coder's in the 1870 Census, and while still in Benton County, the families are 10 pages apart on the 1880 Census. It's unknown if Vianna's daughter Cora went with her mother to live in Joseph Murphy's family. By the time of the 1900 Census, only the children of Joseph and Vianna are listed in their household on the census record.

Joseph and Vianna had a total of five children, Mary Belle (1888-1910), H. B. (1890 - 1900), Jesse Forest (1892-1959), Floyd Ray (1894-1966), and Levi Roy (1898-1943). Several of the descendants have had DNA tests, and those tests support the family relationships described here.

Joseph died in 1918, and the 1920 Census shows Vianna living in the household of her niece and her niece's husband, Roscoe and Lulu Armstrong. Lulu was the daughter of Vianna's sister, Mary.

In 1924 Vianna married Allison "Allen" Brown, the second marriage for both of them. The 1930 Census shows them residing in Paxton Township, Pike County. The census record lists Allison's occupation as farmer, and that he worked the previous day, despite being 71 years old. However, their home is listed as "not a farm". Nearby (same census page) is James Purdum, likely a cousin of Vianna's. All the other households on the census page indicate that they are farms, so one wonders if this was a small home that was being rented to Allison and Vianna, but not an active farm.

Vianna died in 1934 from apparent chronic heart problems, likely brought on by hypertension, arteriosclerosis, and diabetes. She is buried beside Joseph Murphy at Mount Latham Cemetery, west of Waverly, Ohio.

If one accepts the birth record of Clara Brodess/Cora Coder as accurate, and that the father is Charles W Brodess, there are two candidates as the father. One is Charles W Brodess (1852-1902), who is shown as residing in Ross County, Twin Township on the 1860 and 1870 Censuses. The other is Charles W Brodess (1826-1903), who is shown residing in Ross County, Concord Township on the 1860 Census and then in Twin Township on the 1870 and 1880 Censuses. The older Charles is the uncle of the younger Charles.

It appears that the 1860 Census missed several homes in Benton Township, Pike County, Ohio, as the Coders appear in Benton Township on both the 1850 and 1870 Census. It seems unlikely that they would have left and returned. Neighbors on the 1850 (McKibbins, Wick) were also not found on the 1860 Census for Benton Township.

While the records indicate that Vianna conceived a child with Charles Brodess, I've been unable to validate this. Given that Joseph Murphy lives very nearby in 1870 (households are listed on the same census page), one wonders if Joseph was the father and Charles Brodess (perhaps a farm laborer) was accused of being the father as the child was conceived out of wedlock. It's pretty clear that Charles had no role in parenting, as he'd returned to Ross County by the time Cora (Clara) is born.

With no 1890 Census, it's difficult to know what happened, and if Cora went to live with Vianna and Joseph after they married. If anyone has family history about the family, please post a comment!

If you're a descendant of Charles W Brodess and have done DNA testing, please let me know! I'd love to try to verify a connection that would prove (or disprove) the parentage of Cora Coder.
