Biography

Margaret Coffin was born on January 29, 1896 in North Yakima, Yakima Co, Washington. Margaret was the second eldest of four children born to Yakima Valley pioneers, Harvard Stanley Coffin and Anna Florence Wenner.

She was a student when she applied for a passport on October 23,1916. She scheduled travel to Japan, China, Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand.

Margaret graduated from University of Washington in Seattle in 1921. She taught English and Sociology at Washington State Normal School in Ellensburg from 1931-1940. Margaret was a poet who printed two poetry books “Out of the Sky” and “The Old Door”. Some of her poems were printed in the New Yorker magazine.

Margaret married on December 21, 1933 to Otis Halbert Holmes “Hal”, son of Otis Halbert Holmes and Mary Haskell.

Otis was born on February 22, 1902 in Cresco, Howard County, Iowa. At the age of thirteen, he moved to Walla Walla, Washington with his parents. He graduated from Whitman College in 1923. He taught High School for a year and then sat on the faculty of Central Washington College of Education at Ellensburg before and again for twelve years after completing his education at Columbia University in New York City in 1927. He then taught at Columbia for two years before returning to the faculty position that he had left in the state of Washington.

Margaret flew to Honolulu, Hawaii to attend the wedding of her nephew, Edwin Robert Ballard to Ruth Shirley Swenson on September 23, 1955. Margaret died on April 30, 1983 in Ellensburg, Kittitas, Washington.

Grandson of Dudley Chase Haskell, politics were in his blood. Like his grandfather before him, Hal Holmes was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-eighth and the consecutive seven Congresses to follow, serving from January 3, 1943-January 3, 1959. He did not seek another term. Otis died on July 27, 1977 in Yakima, Washington.

Margaret and Otis are buried in Terrace Heights Memorial Park in Yakima, Yakima County, Washington.
