In the 1911 census John (aged 19), Tailor, was the single son of John Colclough on Castle Street, Carlow.[3]

John Colclough of Castle Street, Carlow married Catherine Doyle of Athy Road, Carlow on the 12th February 1917 in Carlow Cathedral; in the presence of William Finn and Annie Scully.[4] They had six children:

  1. Bridget Mary, b.14th June 1917 in Coal Market, Carlow.
  2. Elizabeth Teresa, b.22nd April 1918 in Coal Market, Carlow.
  3. William, b.1922 in Carlow.

He then lived in Coal Market (renamed Kennedy Street after J.F.K.'s assasination) with his wife. After his father died, 16 Castle Street was left to a brother of his. His brother intended to sell the house, so John attended the auction and instructed nobody to bid against him. He then bought the house and moved there with his family.[5]

In 1938, John became chairperson of the Carlow Urban District Council. He was chairman until 1941 and after a gap of three years he became chairman again from 1945 to 1949.[6][7] Colclough Avenue in Graigue was called after him to honour his useful part in civic affairs.[6][8]

John Colclough died (aged 63) on the 11th September 1955 at 16 Castle Street, Carlow[9] and was buried in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Carlow.[10][11]
