Julia Margaret Cole was the youngest child of George Cole and Matilda Huntsman Cole. She was born on August 1, 1873 in Allen County, Kentucky, United States. Julia's father, George, died when she was about 2 years old leaving the young family to survive in a one-parent household. By 1880, the family was living in New Roe, Allen County, Kentucky. At the age of 16, Julia married James Robert Carter. The marriage took place in Sumner County, Tennessee on July 10, 1889. The 1990 Census indicates that they lived in Scottsville, Kentucky for an unknown period of time as the 1910, 1920, 1930, and 1940 Census records show the family living in Westmoreland, Tennessee. In Westmoreland, the couple made their home on a farm. They parented 12 children together on the farm. Family stories indicate that Julia had a bubbling personality and the she enjoyed her children and grandchildren. Julia became a widow upon her husband's death February 1, 1936. She lived in the old farmhouse for another 19 years. She died in her home from a heart condition on November 4, 1955. Her body was interred at Pleasant Grove Cemetery near the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where family members attended.
