Research Notes

I contacted FindAGrave about the discrepancy between year of birth of 1877 on the death certificate[10] and the obituary attached to the FindAGrave memorial[11] compared to what is on the gravestone. The grave tender Martha Menzel wrote this on the FindAGrave site: "There is some discrepancy on his birth year. The stone 1878. His WWII draft registration which he filled out indicated 1878. However, the death certificate and obituary both say 1877. The death certificate and the obituary were most probably filled out by the same person and not the deceased." She also wrote the following to me which makes sense: "I am not going to change the year on this memorial. The obituary and the death certificate were most like filled out by his wife under stress. Ace personally registered for the WWII draft. On the draft he put 1878. The stone says 1878. Genealogical practices says to take the original source closest to the event. WWII draft is closer to his birth than the dc/obit, plus one was filled out personally by the deceased and the others were not." Lansing-1003 17:24, 22 September 2018 (UTC)
