Eugene Campbell Coles was born on 1871 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, United States. He was the son of Edward Coles and Bessie Campbell. He died young after being recorded in the 1880 US Census, but not included in the 1890 report, likely from Yellow Fever, which plagued Philadelphia during this period.
