Biography

Alanson Coleman Connolly was born about 7 April 1815 in Burke County, North Carolina, United States. He was the son of Cyrus Payne Connolly and Mary Elizabeth Callicott.[citation needed]

Alanson married Mary "Polly" Sparks , daughter of James Sparks, in 1835 in Yancey, North Carolina.[citation needed] Their children were:

  1. William Patterson Connolly (1836 - 1852)
  2. Sarah Ann Connolly (1838 - 1880)
  3. Jane Amanda Connolly (1840 - 1925)
  4. Martha Elizabeth Connelly (1843 - 1912)
  5. Cyrus L. Connolly (1844 - 1863)
  6. Julia Josephine Connolly (1846 - 1920)
  7. James Kimsey (Kensey) Connolly (1849 - 1928)
  8. Jefferson Jones Connolly (1851 - 1923)
  9. Eliza Emaline Connolly (1854 - 1945)
  10. John Henry Connally (1857 - 1943)

During the 1840 and 1850 censuses, Alanson and Polly were living in Cherokee County, North Carolina.[1][2] After about 1851, a large area around their home in Cherokee County became part of the Cherokee Indian reservation (perhaps more properly known today as the Qualla Boundary). Families in the area were forced to sell their land and leave. Alanson's family and several related families and neighbors migrated from North Carolina to Missouri. Alanson's family continued on to Arkansas, where their last two children were born.[3] Polly died there in 1859.[4] During the 1860 census, Alanson was widowed and living with his children in Flint Township, Benton County, Arkansas.[3]

Alanson next married Luvina C. Hilliard on 18 October 1865 in Benton County.[5] Their children were:

  1. Cynthia Connolly (1866 - 1870)
  2. Luvina Catherine Connolly (1869 - 1952)
  3. Robert Lee Connolly (1870 - 1920)
  4. Myra Ann Connolly (1873 - 1951)
  5. Alanson Coleman Connolly (1875 - 1956)

Alanson died on 8 December 1876 in Siloam Springs, Benton County.[6]

Alanson was born in 1815 in Burke County, North Carolina, the 7th of 10 children of Cyrus Payne Connolly and Mary Elizabeth Callicott. He married Polly Sparks in 1835 in Yancey County, North Carolina. Between 1852 and 1854, they migrated with their 8 children and other families to Missouri, where most of the group remained in Wright County. Their oldest son, William, died on the journey. Alanson and Polly continued on to Benton County, Arkansas, where their next two children were born. Polly died there in 1859 and is buried in Siloam Springs. Their son, Cyrus, was drafted into the Confederate Army in November, 1861, and was killed in the Battle of Iuka, Mississippi, in September of 1862. In 1865, Alanson married Luvina Rodgers, a. widow with whom he had 5 more children. A story has been told that the family had apple orchards in Benton County, and sold apples over a wide area. Alanson died in 1876, and is buried in Hico Cemetery in Siloam Springs where Polly is buried also. The very large family scattered widely, mostly to Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri.
