Jacob Dickerson Coon is the son of Jacob B. Coon and Julia Caroline Blair. His parents were born in Madison County, Ohio and were married there on 27 May 1841. In 1849, his parents moved to Mercer County, Missouri by ox-drawn covered wagon. They bought a section of land, donating a plat for the Coon Cemetery and Church. There was a school, cemetery, and church all named after the family. The church was called the "Coon Methodist Church". The cemetery was called "Coon Cemetery".

J. D. Coon Dies Saturday At Topeka, Kan. Former County Officer and Prominent Business Man Of Mercer County

Jacob D. Coon, well known in Mercer and Grundy counties, and who had several relatives in this community, died Saturday at the home or his daughter, Mrs. Wayne Butcher at Topeka. The funeral services were held at Princeton Tuesday by Rev V. P. Walker at the Methodist church and interment was in the Coon cemetery.

Jacob D. Coon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob B. Coon, was born on a farm near Mill Grove Feb 28, 1857, being 85 years of age at the time of his death.

During his early life he was engaged in farming and was active in the affairs of his community. In 1891 he was elected collector of Washington township in Mercer county and served five years. He then was elected a member of the Mercer county court which office he held four years. He was elected member of the state legislature in 1906 where he served four years. For several years he was engaged in the loan and insurance business in Princeton.

In 1875 Mr. Coon was married to Mary Smith and they were the parents of four daughters and one son. The wife died in 1889 and Mr. Coon later was married to Mrs. Huldah Bell. To this union one son was born.

The survivors are one son, Ian of Chanute, Kan.; two daughters Mrs. Anna Butcher of Topeka, Kan., and Mrs. Adda Wilson of Houston, Tex. A son and two daughters preceded him in death.
