Laura Copes's record says she is b. 1850, although Kathryn Hughes's says 1851. And 1850 census lists her as age 1.

She is listed as Virginia M. Copes, age 10, in 1860 census, Elizabeth City, Pasquotank Co, NC. with her mother, brother William Selby, stepfather Samuel Rhodes, Peter S. Hawkins (age 7), H. W. Rodes (male, age 12, who is Sam's brother), and Fanney Sawyer (45, black domestic).
