Biography

John Copland was born about 1810 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.^[1][2][3] His parents were John Copland and Elizabeth Gilmour.^[4] [a]

On 23 Jun 1833 John married Jane (aka Jean) Carse in Barony, Lanark, Scotland.^[5]

On 7 Jun 1841 John and Jane were living with four children on Bishop Street in Barony, Lanark, Scotland. John's mother, Elizabeth, was also living with the family. John's occupation was Moulder.^[6] [b] [c]

On 30 Mar 1851 John and Jane were living at Newtown in Renfrew, Renfrewshire, with five children. John's occupation was Moulder.^[1]

On 7 April 1861 John and Jane were living at 9 Hollowbank in Dalry, Aryshire, with two sons. John's occupation was Iron Moulder. (Daughters Isabella and Jane had moved to Renfrew and were working in the cloth industry.)^[2]

On 2 Apr 1871 John and Jane were living at 22 Brandon St in Glasgow with one son and one grandson. John's occupation was Iron Moulder.^[3]

John died on 30 Jul 1875 at the age of 64 at 38 John Knox Street in Glasgow. The cause of death was liver disease.^[4]

[a] His age and birthplace are listed consistently in census records, with the exception of the age in 1851 (this must be an error). Unable to locate baptism record on ScotlandsPeople.

[b] The 1841 census shows near neighbours Jannet Copland (age 30 or 20?), Elizabeth Copland (age 15), and William Copland (age 20) - possibly siblings? Unable to confirm their relationship so far.

[c] In 1841 their daughter Isabella is not listed, but their son Robert is listed with the Isabella's proper age, so this is likely an error.

[d] Cannot locate baptism records for any of the children in ScotlandsPeople, in any county.
