Biography

Also living in the household with Reuben and his mother, is his 5 year old daughter, Mary Ann, erroneously listed as Sary A. Reuben had two children by a woman he did not marry -- a son, Darnold M., and Mary Ann. This woman was thought to be the daughter of one Lizzie Moore of either Shelby or Rusk County, Texas. According to family stories, she died when the children were quite young.

Reuben was reportedly 30 years old as of the 1st of June 1850. However, on the 1860 U.S. census, Shelby County, Texas he is reportedly 39 years old as of June 1, 1860. If accurate, 1821 was more likely his birth year. On the Muster In Roll of Company I, Texas Mounted Volunteers, Mexican War, dated 20 May 1847, he is recorded as being 24 years old. If his age was accurately recorded on that date, 1823 would more likely be his year of birth. His tombstone, which was placed in the Wilson Cemetery, Shelby County, Texas, is inscribed 1821 - 1878. Of the above discrepant records, the military record is considered the most likely to be accurate, since Reuben would have been asked by the mustering in officer to state his age. There is no guarantee he personally stated his age to either the 1850 or 1869 census enumerator. His tombstone dates were derived by descendants long after the fact.

DEATH: Interview with Edna Ruth (Corder) Matlock (1103 Shepard Drive, Nacogdoches, Texas 75961, by Ann H. Auberg, 16 November 1988. Transcript held in 2000 by Auberg (3009 Moss Avenue, Midland, Texas). Mrs. Matlock is now deceased. Edna stated her father, Harrison Calvin Corder, was about six months old when his father died. He was born in September 1878, therefore, she believed Reuben must have died in the spring of 1879. Apparently, the weather was still cold. According to his daughter, Helen, Reuben came in from out of doors, placed new logs on the fire, suffered a heart attack, and died soon thereafter.Line in Record @I526@ (RIN 29284) from GEDCOM file not recognized:
