Joseph was born in Utah in 1888. He was the son of Joseph Alexander Cornwall and Mary Ellen Spencer. In 1913 Joseph married Mary Alice Johanson Haigh and together they were parents of seven children. They lived in Salt Lake City where Joseph was a musician, supervisor of music for schools. He was Conductor of the Morman Tabernacle Choir from 1935-1957 and wrote three books on music. Joseph passed away in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1983 at age 95. He was buried beside Mary in Millcreek, Utah.

J. Spencer Cornwall, 95, a retired conductor of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, died at his home here Feb. 26. The cause of death was not reported.
Mr. Cornwall conducted the choir from 1935 until 1957. He wrote three books, "Fundamentals of Conducting," "A Century of Singing" and "Stories of Our Hymns."
