Joseph Cottam was born on 3 July 1871 in Darraweit Guim, Victoria, Australia, the son of Elizabeth (Cruikshank) Cottam and James Cottam.^[1]

He married Violet Maude Palmer in 1904 in Victoria.^[2] Their children were:^{[citation needed]}
