"3 He was the eldest son and heir of Hugh de Courtenay, Baron of Okehanipton; but, abandoning all his brilliant prospects in favour of his next brother Hugh (afterwards Earl of Devon) , he entered Religion, when quite a young man, as a Monk of Tavistock."

Preface xxxvii: "His successor, John de Courtenay, one of the Monks, was blessed by the Bishop at Clyst5 on the 24th of April, 1334"

lxiv: But the end was near; Courtenay died in 1349, probably one of the victims of the plague known as " the Black Death."
