Biography

Margaret was born in 1673. She was the daughter of Edward Cowell and Sarah Hobart. She passed away about 1719.

"On 2 Aug 1693 when Margaret was 20, she first married John Johnson, son of Edward Johnson (1619-15 Sep 1692) & Katherine Baker (ca 1626-7 Jan 1700/1), in Boston, MA. John Johnson was a "mariner servant" and they had a son named John Johnson born in 1694. In 1693 he buys "house and land of adm. of Edward Cowell E. side Washington St between Bedford and Essex Sts." [1]

On March 3, 1695/6 Sam Sewall visited with the widow Margaret Johnson who declined to administrate her mother's estate. Sewall recommended giving administration to John Cleverly the 2nd husband of Sarah Hobart Cowell. [2]

On 30 Sep 1697 when Margaret was 24, she second married Samuel Haugh, son of Samuel Haugh (18 Oct 1651-25 Jun 1679) & Anna Raynsford (1 Feb 1651[/2]-bef 11 Apr 1690), in Boston, MA. Samuel married Margaret Cowell on 30 Sep 1697 in Boston MA. (Margaret Cowell was born on 2 Sep 1673 in Boston MA and died about 1719.) According to "American Silversmiths" Samuel wrote his will on 4 Mar 1717 in Boston MA leaving his estate to his wife during her widowhood. If she remarried, the estate was to be divided equally among their children. Edward, the eldest son, was to recieve "all my Working Tooles belonging to the Goldsmiths Trade. . . if he lives to be Twenty one Years old, and Inclines to work at the Goldsmiths Trade." When Margaret Haugh died two years later, Edward was working as a mariner; her will contains no mention of the tools, which may have been sold to Thomas Bradford.[3]
