Biography

ANDREW COWSERT * b. 1767 *d. April 15, 1826 (or April 16, 1824 Williamson County Tennessee). Buried "old brick church cemetery" near old Jackson College in Maury County, Tenn. Inscription on his stone has about shaled away. *m. JANE ? (maybe CUNNINGHAM) * b. 1780 York County South Carolina *d. 1833 (1831 ?) Williamson County, Tenn.

Andrew was a Presbyterian. He bought land in Lancaster County, South Carolina in 1791. Andrew COUSAR purchased land from the state on South Carolina in 1797. He went from North Carolina? (may should by South Carolina) to Tenn. in 1797. Andrew sold his land in South Carolina and bought land in Maury Co., Tenn. in 1799. Little information available concerning this family before they left South Carolina. He is found in the census records of Davidson County (later Williamson County Tenn.). In Williamson County Tenn., Andrew settled between Franklin and the first knob south of Major Porter's place. He was a Veteran of The War of 1812, Maury Co., Tenn. Andrew served as farrier to Capt. Archibald McKinney's Company from Sept. 24, 1813 to May 1814. On Feb. 1820 Andrew COWSER sold to Kinchen Sparkman, a Negro woman, Nancy, 23 years old, and her child Hannah, 2 years old for $750. Andrew lived in the Waxhaw Valley.

When Sherman made his famous march to the sea, killing and burning everything in sight during the Civil War, he marched thru the Waxhaw Valley. Many records were destroyed. Andrew lived out his life on his farm in Tenn. His Will settled October 1826 in Williamson County, Tenn. In his Will, his land was to be divided in thirds. His wife Jane received the middle lot. His son James of Williamson Co., Tenn. received the North end. His son John of Missouri received the South end. His wife, Jane, willed the family farm to her four children when she died in 1833.
