Biography

Lucy was born on 1 August 1846 in Fremantle, Western Australia.[1][2] She is the daughter of John Cox and Martha Drew.

She married John Solomon James in 1866 at Fremantle.[3] They had nine children over twenty years.

Daily News (Perth, WA : 1882 - 1955), Thursday 15 March 1928, page 11
Mrs. Lucy James, a resident of this State for the last 81 years, passed away at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Ada M'Kay, 32 Grey-street, Fremantle, on March 5. Mrs. James, who was 81 years of age, had lived in either Perth or Fremantle the whole of her life. Her father, the late Mr. John Cox, arrived here in the early days in the ship Simon Taylor.

About sixty years ago the de-ceased was married to Mr. John Solomon James,, at one time an accountant in Perth, who pre-deceased her by 20 years. Mrs. James was presented with a certifi-cate by the Red Cross Society in recog-nition of her four years' services during the war. She possessed an amiable dis-position, and was highly respected. A family of two sons, five daughters, 24 grandchildren and one great-grand-daughter survive her.

The funeral cor-tege moved from the residence on Tues-day, March 6, and proceeded to the Church of England cemetery, Karra-katta. The Rev. Coulson, who conducted a short service at the residence, also of-ficiated at the grave side in the pres-ence of a large gathering. The chief mourners were Miss Emily James and Mesdames W. Tapping, A. M'Kay, R. Sanderson, and G. H. House (daugh-ters), Messrs. G. A. and H. W. James (sons), Mesdames G. A. and H. W. James (daughters-in-law), Messrs. G. House, E. Sanderson, and W. Tapping (sons-in-(daughters-in-law), Messrs. G. House, R. J., K., Q., H., and V. James, and G. Tapping (grandsons), Miss D. Tapping (grand-daughter), Mesdames L. Pix, W. T. Wood, M. Maywood, and A. Lawrence (nieces), and Messrs. J. and A. Russ and L. Pix (nephews). The pall-bearers were Messrs. G. Williams, C. Ashby, W. R. Haynes, C. Ryan, F. Tate, and A. Walker. Many handsome wreaths were placed on the grave and numerous com-munications of sympathy have been re-ceived by the bereaved relatives. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. Arthur E. Davies and Co., of Fremantle and Claremont.[4]
