Biography

Samuel was born in 1826. He was the son of John Coy and Sally Barker. He passed away in 1867.

By Cindy Karschner Haase - Apr 30, 2000 I just received a package of info from Linda Rader, a Coy researcher. It contains research assembled by Dr. Brian Berry on the parentage of Samuel Coy (Martha Coy Mercer's father). Samuel's parents are John Coy and Elizabeth Green (dau of James Green). John was born c1794 in MD, the son of Christopher and Elizabeth Tucker Coy. John moved with his parents to Garrard Co., KY, when he married Elizabeth Green in 1821. When the family moved west so did John. He was in Galletin Co., IL in 1830 with three young sons and his young daughter in his household, although most of his children appear to have been born in IN, where we found him in Parke Co in 1850. His family with Elizabeth appears to have comprised: David b c 1821 Daniel b c 1821 Delia Ann b c 1821 SAMUEL b c 1825 (our ancestor) Sarah Janeb c 1828 Charles Wesley (C.W.) b c 1832 Mary E. b c 1838

Christoper Coy's birthdate is not recorded in his Revolutionary war Pension File, nor is the place, but Dr. John Coy, a descendant and Coy reseearcher places it c 1751 probably in Somerset Co., MD. Christopher does however record his marriage to Elizabeth Tucker as 12 or 15 of April, 1773 or 5 or 6, probably the latter in Worcester Co., MD. Their first child, Anna, was born in 1778. On March 20, 1779, he enlisted in the 7th MD Regiment, serving as a private in Capt Henry Gaither's Co. under Col. Smallwood until after the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. He was discharged 12 Aug 1783 as a corporal. Christopher was a farmer and a maker of "coarse" (i.e. work) shoes. In 1787, he was in Frederick Co. MD, as evidenced by his appearance for Mary Tucker's marriage at the Frederick Co., Evangelical Luteran Church. "Johann Fridrich Kirchner* & Mary Tucker by license. Witnesses: Stephen and Littlelton and Stephen Tucker. Johannes Brunner. Christoper Coy." Christopher and his brother William relocated to Kentucky. He is listed in EARLY KENTUCKY LANDOWNERS with the dates 5 July 1796 and 8 June 1797. Dr. Coy says they relocated to Madison Co., KY, on Spoonville (now Nina) Ridge, close to the Garrard Co. line. On 6 Nov. 1821 he applied in Madison Co., KY for a Revolutionary War pension, pleading poverty and his and his wife's infirmity with property valued at $35.00 A pension of $8 per month was granted, beginning 6 Nov 1821. Christoper next relocated Harrison Co., IN in 1828, to Washington Co in 1830, and to Lawrence Co., IL, where he died 12 Oct 1839 in Dennison Twp. After Christopher's death, Elizabeth moved back and forth between Lawrence Co., and Parke Co., IN where son John (our ancestor) resided. She died near Bridgeport in Lawrence Co., 2 Mar 1847 at the age of 88. * Interesting similiarity to our family name of Karschner. In those days it had many different spellings.
