James Craggs, son of Anthony Craggs and his wife, Anne Moorcroft, was baptised at Wolsingham in County Durham on the 10th of June 1657.[1] [2] [3]
He married Elizabeth Richards, daughter of Jacob Richards on the 3rd of January 1683 at St Benet, Paul's Wharf, London. [4] History of Parliament dates the marriage to 4 January 1684. [3] She bore him 3 sons, all of whom died in James' lifetime, two very young, and 3 daughters. [3]
In 1702 he was returned to Parliament, together with Francis Scobell, as member for Grampound. They were returned again in 1705. In 1708 he was partnered with Thomas Scawen and in 1710 with Thomas Coke who relegated him to second place. [5]
Elizabeth died on the 20th of January 1711 and was buried at Charlton in Kent.[1]
James only surviving son, also James and himself an MP, died of smallpox on 16 February 1721. James died a month later on the 16th of March; his estate, reported to be valued at one million and a half, was inherited by his daughters.[1] He was buried with Elizabeth at Charlton.[3]
