Biography

He was born in June 1861 in Pennsylvania, USA and his parents were Elizabeth (Wilson) and Ebenezer Grant Crawford.

About 1880 he was an oil gauger on leases in the area of Emlenton, Venango County, Pennsylvania, USA.

He later became prominent in the oil and gas industries and accumulated considerable wealth. He was instrumental in consolidating the Ohio fuel Supply Company and the Columbia Gas and Electric Company, which at that time had headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. The consolidation became known as the Columbia System, one of the largest utility companies in the USA.

About 1920 he moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA but maintained a residence in Emlenton as long as he lived.

About 1930 George Washington Crawford married Annie Laurie Warmack (1900-1984) and they had a daughter, Martha Sharp Crawford (most famously known as Sunny VonBulow).

In his latter years he returned to Emlenton, only to vote.

He died on 06 Apr 1935 Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, USA and was buried in the family vault at Emlenton Cemetery in Emlenton, Venango County, Pennsylvania, USA. [1]

After his death his widow and daughter maintained a residence in New York City, USA and another, called "Tamerlane" in Greenwich, Connecticut, USA.
