Biography

James is the son of John Crew and Sarah, as listed in the Henrico Monthly Meeting, (Virginia) . A photograph of the actual record is attached to this profile.

The Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy by William Wade Hinshaw lists James' birthdate in two places. In the Henrico Monthly Meeting (Virginia) records, he is listed as born 1750,11,25 and in the Rich Square Monthly Meeting (North Carolina) records he is listed as born 1-25-1750. Because James was born in Virginia, I believe that is the correct record. (Remember before 1753, the Quaker year started in March, so we have the following birth dates: Virginia reads 25 January 1750 and North Carolina reads 25 March 1750.)

He was married to Ann Crew, daughter of Ellyson Crew and Lydia Ladd, on 7 September 1773 in Charles City County, Virginia per the Quaker records.

In February of 1781, James and family were granted a certificate to Rich Square Monthly Meeting in North Carolina. They produced the certificate in October 1781. The family's birth dates are recorded in the Rich Square Monthly Meeting as follows:

James is not listed in the Quaker records again and he is not listed in any US Federal Census record after 1800.

He dies before December 1809, when a probate record is found with the names of three of his sons, Elisha, Jacob, and Henry. The record names Elisha as administrator of James' estate.

NOTE: James Crew did not die in 1825 as many online trees assert. This information likely came from the book The Crew Generations by Erman Louie Crew, Sr. and updated by Keith Hinson in June 1991. In it, Mr. Crew states that James Crew died circa 1825 in Northampton County, N.C. The book is not sourced. It is clear from the probate record and the subsequent negative US Federal Census records that James Crew died before December 1809.
