Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

Mary Critchley was born in about 1796 in Lancashire (1797-1801 per 1841 census, 1794 per death/burial age).

Her presumed daughter Esther Critchley was born out of wedlock in about 1829 in Prescot, Lancashire. The father was John Critchley, a blacksmith per Esther's marriage record or a labourer per her filiation and maintenance record.

Mary married Joshua Hewitt sometime between 1829 and 1845, probably before 1839. No record of the marriage has yet been found.

Their son John was born in about 1836 in Prescot, Lancashire.

Their daughter Anne was christened on 17 Nov 1839 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as watchmaker, and the family's address as Eccleston.[1]

By June 6th 1841, the family was living in Lane Ends, Eccleston; Joshua was a journeyman watch maker.

Their daughter Mary was christened on 29 Jan 1843 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as watch maker, and the family's address as Eccleston.[2] She died in 1844, and was buried on 7 Jan 1844 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her age was recorded as 1¼, and her address as Eccleston.[3]

Another daughter Mary was born in about 1845,[4] and christened on 23 Mar 1845 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as watch maker, and the family's address as Eccleston.[5]

Mary died in about 1845, and was buried on 3 Jan 1845 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her age was recorded as 49, and her address as Prescot.

Research Notes

Beware possible confusion with Joshua Hewit (1810-bef.1833)'s wife Mary Anne Mercer - they married in 1830 and had two children in 1831 and 1833 and then Mary Anne died.
