Joshua Critchley was born in about 1840 in Eccleston in Prescot, Lancashire. He was the son of Lawrence Critchley and Ellen (Ratcliff) Critchley. ^[1]

By June 6th 1841, they were living in Phythian Street, Eccleston. Joshua's father was a watchmaker. ^[2]

Joshua's father died in 1844, and was buried on 14 Apr 1844 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire.

By March 30th 1851, Joshua was living with his mother and various siblings in Eccleston, Lancashire. ^[3]

By April 7th 1861, Joshua was living with his mother at 26 Phythian Street, Eccleston; he was a coal carter, as was she. ^[4]

Joshua's mother Ellen died in 1863, and was buried on 15 Apr 1863 at Rainford Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire.

By April 2nd 1871, Joshua was a lodger in South Shields, County Durham, where he was working as a labourer. ^[5]
