Edward was born in 1858[1] in Beverley, Yorkshire, England, where he lived with his parents, John Crombie and Elizabeth Slater, in 1861.[2] The family had moved to Hull, Yorkshire, by 1871.[3]
At the time of the 1881 Edward was first mate aboard the Harrier in Hull.[4]
