Elcana C. Cross was born near Richmond Virgina, in about 1833. His name and date of birth appear different on many records.
On his Mexican War Record his name is Elkany Cross(or Elkaney).
On the Census records sometimes it appeared as Elcanah. Elcana left home at a very early age, about 12 yrs. He joined the Army at Knoxville, Tennessee, November 1, 1847 to fight in the Mexican War and was on the Muster-out Roll dated July 20 1848 in Memphis, Tennessee. His age was listed as 19 yrs. on his Army enrollment in 1847.
On the 1850 Census of Knox, Co. Missouri he was a farmer, age 19 yrs.
Elcana married Mary Margaret Hawkins on Nov. 5 1854 in Ralls, Co. Missouri.(The marriage record shows Alkany Cross and Mary Jane Hawkins).
In Oct. 1862 he joined the confederate Army in Barry, Co. MO and surrendered at Shreveport, LA in 1865. He was on the Roll of Prisoners of War and paroled at Alexandria, LA on June 7 1865. Elcana's description on his Civil War Record was height: 5'8", complexion dark, eyes hazel, hair dark, and age 32 years in 1862.
Elcana died Oct 3 1878 near Callisburg, Cooke Co. Texas.
