John was born about 1853. He is the son of Peter Cross and Ann Caldwell.

In 1871, at the age of 18, John is living at 92 Main Street, in Bridgeton, Lanarkshire, with his parents Peter age 41, Ann age 42, and his siblings, James (Lewis?) age 4 and Ann age 1. He is working as a Thsher (?).

In 1881, at the age of 28, John is living at 379 Great Eastern Road Or Cartyne Place, in Camlachie, Lanarkshire, with his parents Peter age 50, Ann age 51, and his siblings Lewis age 14 and Annie age 11. John is a Butcher.
