Biography
Joseph Crutchfield is a part of US Black heritage.
Joseph was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in the 18th U. S. Colored Infantry.[1]
In the 1880 census Jos Crutchfield (age 35), Servant, was the married head of household in Cheyenne, Laramie, Wyoming Territory, United States.[2]
In the 1900 census Joseph Crutchfield (age 57), Restaurant Keeper, was the married head of household in San Francisco, San Francisco, California.[3]
"Joseph Crutchfield, a colored man, who had a small restaurant at 2841 Baker street, shot himself through the heart. About 6 a. m. William Stewart, who is connected with the master's department at the Presidio, called, at the restaurant for his breakfast. The place was closed, and, thinking something was wrong, he notified the North End police station. Police officers broke open the front door and Crutchfleld was found dead in bed in the rear of the restaurant with a bullet wound over his heart and a revolver beside the body. Crutchfleld was 65 years of age and a member of James A. Garfleld Post of the Grand Army. He had had trouble with his wlfe."[4]
