Biography

James Cullen was born in 1725 in England. He was baptised on 29 sep 1725 in Wisbech St Peter and St Paul, Cambridgeshire, England.^[1]

His daughter, Susannah, who married Ouladah Equiano, is said to be of Scottish descent.

James married Anne Jones on 27 May 1753 in Ely Holy Trinity, Cambridgeshire, England.^[2]Both were residents of that parish.

They had nine known children during their marriage. He lived in Ely, Cambridgeshire, England, on October 4, 1756, and was listed as an apprentice whitesmith (which is similar to a blacksmith, but works with more refined products involving filing or shaping of the iron or working with lighter metal) in the National Archives Apprenticeship books of that year and following years. ^[3]

He was buried on 21st August 1781 at Ely Holy Trinity Church (the same church his he was married and his children were baptised in). ^[4]
