Biography

John was born in 1783. He passed away in 1855.

Name

John Culvey, also known as John Calvey.[1][2][3]
The original hand-written name from the page of marriages in the image of the McAlvey family Bible appears to read John Culvy in the original blue ink. In black ink, the letter 'M' appears to have been later added to his name. This alteration was also made to the name "Elizabeth Calvy" on the page for deaths. [3]

Parents

John Christopher Culvey and Anne Unknown.[1][4]
John is known to have lived in Centre County by 1850.[2] A John Calvey Jr. is recorded living at the same location as his inferred father in Logan Twp. in 1830.[1] The family of John Culvey Jr. in Logan matches John Culvey of this profile with respect to the number of sons, daughters, and their age brackets. It’s noted that the age brackets for the father and mother appear in the 30–39-year bracket instead of the 40–49 bracket. It’s possible this deviation is due to a recording error.
It seems reasonable that the family of John Culvey, Jr. shown in the census is the family of John Culvey because he was recorded living with his son George in nearby Halfmoon Twp., Centre County in 1850. The James McAlvey family Bible proves John Culvey’s inferred brothers share names with some of his sons, Christopher (b. 1818), Jacob (b. 1821) and George W. (b. 1829).[3] No other matching 1830 census records were found for John Culvey in Mifflin and Centre counties.[5]

Birth

1783, Likely in Smithfield Twp., Northampton, Pennsylvania. Smithfield later became part of Monroe County. He also could have been born in Berks County, Pennsylvania depending on the exact date his parents removed to Smithfield and John's date of birth.[2][3][6]

Places of Residence

  1. Northampton, Pennsylvania[6]
  2. Logan Twp., Centre, Pennsylvania, United States[1]
  3. Halfmoon Twp., Centre, Pennsylvania[2]

Marriage

John married about 1809 in Mifflin Co., PA to Elizabeth Moore.[3][7]

Children

John and Elizabeth Culvey had the following children.[3] Each child may have spelled their surname differently during adulthood. All children were likely born in Centre Co., Pennsylvania.
  1. James McAlvey, b. 24 Sep 1811; d. 28 Apr 1906 in Fulton, Gratiot, MI.[7]
  2. Marion Culvey, b. 24 Oct 1813. The 1830 U.S. census records this child as a daughter.[1]
  3. Henry Culvey, b. 4 Apr 1816.
  4. Christopher McKelvey, b. 29 Sep 1818; d. Aft. 1900 in Jackson, Mercer, PA.[8]
  5. Jacob Culvey, b. 11 Jun 1821.
  6. Samuel A. McKelvey, b. 23 Oct 1824; d. 25 Jan 1898 in Whitley, Indiana, United States; m. 1st Catherine Bennet; m. 2nd Sarah E. (Prior) Pool. He and his son Franklin both enlisted in the 206th PA Infantry while living in Indiana Co., PA. See Research Notes.[9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]
  7. Solomon Culvey, d. 17 Mar 1827.
  8. George William Kelvey, a.k.a. Moore, b. 30 Apr 1829; d. 2 Dec 1921 in Coolspring, Mercer, PA.[2][17][18][19]

Death

8 Oct 1855, likely near Halfmoon Township, Centre, Pennsylvania.[2][3]

Burial

Unknown.

Research Notes

Alleged mother: If Anna (Unknown) Culvey's age at death was accurate, it's possible she was a stepmother because she could have been too old to be the mother of John's youngest brother Jacob.

Spelling of Surname: There is little double that John's father, John Christian, spelled his name Culvey because that spelling appeared in multiple contemporary sources, including his original headstone as shown on Find-a-Grave.[1][20][21] Entries into the McAlvey family Bible appear to spell this name as "Culvy" in some locations and "Calvy" in others.[3] It's also noted that John's children spelled their last names differently when they were adults. This profile standardizes his last name at birth as Culvey and his alias as Calvey.

Birth Location: Many Ancestry.com users show John's birth location as either New York or Canada. The Canada location is based on the death certificate of his son, James McAlvey.[7] However, more contemporary sources indicate he was born in Pennsylvania.[2][22][23][24]

Transcription of the McAlvey family Bible on Genealogy.com: It's noted that this transcription shows son Samuel's name mis-transcribed as 'Daniel'.[3] Images of this Bible have been shared by Ancestry.com user DMcAlvey. A careful comparison of different D's and S's written in the same handwriting and ink show this name to be written as "Samiel" (sic).

Parents of Samuel A. McKelvey: Unfortunately many Ancestry users believe the Samuel A. McKelvey, who was born in 1825 in Pennsylvania, was the son of Nathaniel McKelvey (b. 1801) and the grandson of John McKelvey and Martha Hamill. Samuel doesn't match this family for the following reasons:

  1. Nathaniel had a son named Samuel who was born in 1850 according to the 1850 census.[25] It would have been extremely unusual for Nathaniel to name two living sons Samuel.
  2. The first Samuel, b. in 1825, would have been born before Nathaniel's first marriage to Lettice Clark on 16 Nov 1826.[citation needed]
  3. DNA matches on Ancestry.com show descendants of Samuel A. McKelvey match other descendants of Elizabeth Moore and John Culvey. For example, Anonymous Moore and Ancestry users R.R. (managed by rbrager88) and J. McNamara all match each other. Anonymous Moore and R.R. match 114 cM of DNA across 5 segments. Anonymous Moore and J. McNamara share 85 cM of DNA across 2 segments. The closest, inferred common relative of all three persons would most likely be John Culvey of this profile. His wife, Elizabeth Moore, is the 2nd great grandmother of Anonymous Moore. Elizabeth Moore is inferred as the closest common ancestor of R.R. and J. McNamara. R.R. is a direct descendant of Samuel A. McKelvey and J. McNamara is a direct descendant of James McAlvey, son of Elizabeth Moore.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
