Biography

William Benjamin Cunningham was born 31st July 1876 at Chiltern, Victoria. He was the son of Benjamin Cunningham and Mary Jane Holloway. ^[1]

Marriage. In 1899, he married Ethel May Smith, in Victoria. ^[2]

Death. William died in 1941, aged 65. ^[3]

He is buried at Frankston Cemetery, Victoria in a family plot with other family members. With the month of William's death being incorrect, their headstone reads: ^[4]

MR. W. B, CUNNINGHAM

Mr. William Benjamin Cunningham, 65 years, Lewis Street, Frankston, died at the Alfred Hospital on Monday night. About ten weeks ago Mr. Cunningham was admitted to hospital where he was visited on Monday evening by his wife and daughter. He was apparently well when they left, but on returning to Frankston were notified of his death. A baker by trade, Mr. Cunningham conducted a business in Bay Street, over 30 years ago, and later moved to premises which he built in Young Street. He disposed of the business and purchased a horse cab service from Mr. M. Jacobs. With the progress of the town he disposed of the horses and used motor-cars in the service.

Of later years he had lived a semi-retired life. Mr. Cunningham was a past president of the Frankston Branch of the A.N.A., and took an interest in all movements for the welfare of the town. He leaves a wife and three daughters to mourn their loss. An only son died many years ago. The funeral took place at the Frankston Cemetery on Wednesday. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends and many beautiful tributes were sent.

Messrs. J. Cameron, D. Cameron, J. Haggart, E. Bell, J. Watson and S. Layzell, members of Frankston A.NA., were the pallbearers. The coffin was carried by Messrs. John Cameron and W. Beach (sons-in-law), C. Finamore, L. Brittong, T. Green and P. Sanders. The burial service was read by Rev. A. J. Whyte, and the funeral arrangements were conducted by Mr. Hector Gamble.
