According to information on his 1871 Marriage Certificate, James was born c 1848 at Port Philip Victoria Australia to John Curtis and Mary Naylor. He married Frances Annie (Thorne) nee Eames in Beechworth Vic in 1871 and they had children Mary Jane 1871, Sarah Emily 1873 (died 1878), John Edward James 1875, Thomas William 1876 (died 1876), Rose Isabel 1877, Charles Hilton 1880. In October 1880 at the Wagga NSW Court the children were found to be abandoned by both parents and sent to Randwick Asylum for Destitute in Sydney. Baby Charles Hilton died there. James and Frances are then listed as the parents of Benjamin Close born 1881 in Goulburn NSW. James Curtis is listed as one of the 81 miners killed in the first mining explosion at Bulli in 1887.
