MRS. MARIA NEWMAN
PIONEER RESIDENT OF SHERMAN TOWNSHIP DIES AUGUST 5
Mrs. Maria Newman died suddenly Saturday morning at 1:30 o'clock at the home of her son, Eber Goheen, in Sherman township. The family had spent the evening at an ice cream social, on their return home after going to bed heard Mrs. Newman make a slight noise. They went to her to see if she wanted anything and found that she had died. Mrs. Newman had been having trouble with her heart for several years.
Deceased was born at Baltimore, Ont., April 1, 1849. After her marriage to Thomas Goheen they came to Gladwin county in 1884 and homesteaded a farm in Sherman township.
Mr. Goheen died in 1904, and in 1906 she was married to Richard Newman, who died in 1909. After her husband's death she made her home with her son Eber Goheen.
She is survived by four sons, Eber and Thomas Goheen of Sherman township, and Elder Israel Goheen of Flint, and David Riley of Brown City, two brothers, Justis Curvin of Valley Center, and Sidney Curvin of Vassar.
Services were held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at the Sherman L.D.S. church conducted by Elder Mathew Umphrey of Bentley, followed by burial in Butman cemetery.
Those from away who came to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Justis Curvin and family of Valley Center, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Curvin and family of Vassar, Elder Israel Goheen of Flint, and David Riley of Brown City. Gladwin County Record dated 8-11/1927
