Agnes Lee Cushing was born on March 4, 1974 in Alameda County, California. She was the daughter of Charles Cushing of Massachusetts and Dolores Estudillo Cushing the daughter of a Spanish soldier who had received a land grant in the area from the Mexican government before California became a state. [1] Agnes Lee was named in honor of her father's sister, Agnes Lee Cushing Rice. All of the children in the family were named for his family.
In the 1880 U. S. Census (5 June 1880) [2] the family was living at 805 Clay Street in Oakland, Alameda County, California. Dolores was keeping house and Charles was listed as a clerk. The children included: Lizzie age 14, Charles age 13, Thomas age 10, Ernest age 6, George age 4 and Lucy age 1. The four oldest children were attending school. Agnes is not listed, but was probably the one noted as Ernest. (SEE RESEARCH NOTES)
In 1885 Agnes was listed as being in the sixth grade class of Mrs. L. W. Campbell at Lincoln Primary School. [3]
On October 22, 1887 Agnes and her older sister Lucy went to an eleventh birthday party of a friend. Her costume was made of "cream nun's veiling, lace trimmings corsage decolette flowing hair, pearl ornaments. " "The center of gustatory attraction was an immense ring cake, and the hunting for the ring was great sport for the children, the fortunate finder being little Agnes Cushing." [4]
In the 1889 Oakland City Directory [5] showed Agnes living at 1164 Eighth Street in Oakland. She was a fifteen year old student. in 1991 Agnes, Lucy and George were attending Cole School. [6]
In the 1900 U. S. Census (6 June 1900) [7] the family lived at 870 Adeline Street in Oakland. Charles and Dolores had been married thirty-six years. He was in his sixties and was working for Leaf Oil Company. There were five children in the household: Elise W. age 30, Charles H. Jr. age 28, Thomas W. age 27, Agnes L. 25, and Lucy age 20. There was also an 18 year old boarder in the household.
Agnes' father, Charles H. Cushing, died on 30 March 1908 in Alameda County, California. When his will was probated on April 13, 2010, his son Thomas was still in Alameda County but Dolores and her three unmarried had moved to San Francisco, California, Agnes was about thirty-six years old. [8]
In the 1920 U. S. Census ( January 12, 1920) [9] Dolores was eighty-one years old and living in a rented apartment at 2205 Sacramento Street in San Francisco, California. Three daughters were living with her, Elise , Agnes age 45 and Lucy. There was also a maid living in the household.
Dolores died in her home at 2205 Sacramento Street in San Francisco, California on December 22, 1921.
The wife of Elise's brother, Thomas Cushing, died in 1933 and he moved into an apartment at 212 19th Street in Oakland, Alameda County, California. His sisters also moved into the apartment with him prior to 1935. [10]
In the 1940 U. S. Census (April 1940) [10] Thomas W. Cushing, age 72, was listed as living at 212 19th Street in Oakland, Alameda County, California. The home (likely an apartment) was rented for $150 a month. He was listed as an insurance agent, (Stocks and Bonds} and had worked 48 weeks during the year. His income for the year was $5000. His sisters Elisa age 74 and Lucy age 61 were also in the household. All three had completed a high school education.
Agnes had died on December 12, 1939[11] and had lived with her brother and sisters until her death.
Agnes' death announcement appeared in the newspaper on December 14, 1939. Friends were invited to attend mass on Thursday morning, December 14, at 10 o'clock at St Francis DeSales Church, on the corner of Grove and Hobart Streets in Oakland Alameda County. The newspaper stated that the Interment would be private and burial would be in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Oakland. [12]
Agnes is not listed in the 1880 U. S. Census [2] a six year old male "Ernest" was listed. He does not appear in any other record so it is likely that there was never a son Ernest and that it is a census recording error and the six year old was a female, Agnes.
